Charles Darwin, the naturalist scientist who contributed the most to the history of biology, was born in Shrewsbury on February 9, 1809. After finishing his studies at the Shrewsbury school, he entered the University of Edimburg to pursue medicine. In 1827 he left the race and began theology studies at the Faculty of Christian Studies, at the University of Cambridge, in order to become a rural cleric, as his father wanted. There he began an intimate friendship with John Stevens Henslow, priest and botanist, who took him in long expeditions to collect plants and recommended it to Captain Fitz Roy as a crew of the English ship Beagle.
Already at the end of the 18th century, as in search of a spokesman, the evolution theory slowly was the atmosphere of the naturalists. But what gave Darwin the credit to discover natural selection was the publication, on November 24, 1859, of El origen de las especies , the book that contains this application. This edition was exhausted the day of appearance and, with the subsequent ones, there were six publications in total that were published in Darwin's life.
El origen de las especies was the result of an exhaustive and deep observation and research work that Darwin began from a young age, when he dedicated himself to studying natural history and resumed his collections of minerals and insects, which had begun in school. However, what really consecrated the years of study and reflection was his work as a naturalist in the expedition around the world, aboard the Beagle. As stated in the autobiography: "The trip in the Beagle has been the most important event of my life and the one that determined my entire career."
El origen de las especies was the first convincing and clear story about the theory of evolution and natural selection. Darwin's work was narrated in a direct and colloquial language, accessible to any reader. It was able to explain in a simple way that species changed as a result of a new need; that the struggle for survival eliminated unfavorable variations and survived the most suitable; that the number of individuals of each species remained more or less constant; And he explained, by means of thorough descriptions, how the different species according to the environment varied in all aspects.
One of the main influences in his theory of natural selection has been the British cleric and economist, Thomas Malthus, with his essay on the principle of the population (1798). It is also attributed great importance in Darwin's work to the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace (18231915), who in his last expedition to the Malaysia islands formulated his hypothesis about natural selection. In 1858, although they did not know each other, Wallace communicated his ideas to Darwin, who already possessed a similar theory. A few months before the publication of El origen de las especies , both scientists had made a joint publication of manuscript extracts.
Darwin narrated in his travel diary some experiences that led him to the beginning of a religious crisis; He came to write: "... In fact I can hardly understand how there is no one who can want Christian doctrine to be true." Slavery was not compatible, sustenance of the economy of the bourgeoisie, to which it belonged, with the Christian doctrine. Several years later he wrote with a certain ironic tone: "Considering the ferocity with which I have been treated by the orthodox, it seems comic that once thought to be a cleric."
He died on April 19, 1882 of what was later known as Chagas. Although some doctors, contrary to family members, argued that, in reality, the cause of their death was the constant anguish.
